Ever been asked you ‘what you do for a living’? Did you explain with full confidence that you run a creative business? Or did you end up mumbling something vague? Or, (and I know many of you are still in this boat), tell them about your boring office day job instead? It is something many of us go through, especially as creatives. And especially as entrepreneurs with wacky, unique businesses. How do you feel more confident as a creative entrepreneur when your annoying uncle John starts grilling you at the next family reunion? Or…when you are at a networking event, having to introduce yourself?
We don’t take ourselves seriously enough.
Why do we find it so hard to tell people what we do as creatives?
Two reasons:
1. We don’t take ourselves seriously (yet), because we think we are not successful enough to call ourselves a (fill in the blank) or entrepreneur. We believe we have to reach a certain income first, or a certain status or level. But what is success….and who decides that?
2. Most people don’t quite understand what we do and there really is no point. (“Oh, you’re quite arty then, are you? My cousin is an artist too” 🙄)
How do you talk to your uncle John about your business sorting out people’s wardrobes, like my client Ali? Or when you teach dressage horse riders to create freestyle dances, like my client Sandra? Or when you are working on a feature film, like my client Peter?
They glaze over. Or worse; they raise their eyebrows, asking you ‘if there’s any money in that’.
You know exactly what I mean, don’t you? It makes you feel very small.

How do you become confident as a creative business?
You can do two things when accosted by a cynical relative or a fellow business owner at a networking event (who may make you feel all nervous);
– You shrug your shoulders, walk away and pour yourself another glass of wine.
– Or, you can try and become more confident and blow them away with your answer.
Developing a powerful elevator pitch is THE best way to communicate what you do as a business. Forget about your cynical uncle John, you need this tool to speak to your ideal client.
Because if you don’t know how to talk about your business clearly and to-the-point… then you won’t attract many clients at all, and certainly not the right ones.
